North Clinches 2nd PlaceFebruary 15th, 2009; by Jim Schwanda
The North Hunterdon Ice Hockey Club upped their overall record to 13-2-1 and clinched second place in the Cross County JV Hockey League with a victory over Somerville High School and a tie against Voorhees High School this past weekend. The Lions playing with a bench shortened due to the flu outlasted the Pioneer 3-1 Sunday night to finish league play with a 5-2-1 record. Alec Schleicher, Greg Mustillo and Greg Garcia all scored as goaltender Eric Sydow turned away 21 Pioneer shots for the victory.
Friday night the Lions and Vikings skated to a 5-5 tie in a game that saw Voorhees dressing Aspen Ice hockey director and CCJV league directory Brian Hennelly to play as their goaltender. “We are trying to get ready for the playoffs” explained coach Jim Schwanda, “and playing a game against a team with no goalie isn’t much of a challenge”.
Alec Schleicher had a goal and two assists while Zach Bennedsen, Wyatt Kunzman and Mark Schwanda each had a goal and an assist with senior Greg Mustillo also scoring while goaltender Eric Sydow made 20 saves in the tie.
